Week beginning - Tuesday 3rd May 2022

In maths this week we have been learning about measure. We began by using rulers to measure in centimetres. The children learnt the effective techniques of accurately measuring. The learnt to always check that the rules is up the correct way, that they are measuring from zero and that zero is lined up with the start of the object or line they are measuring. The following day the children explored metre sticks and used those the measure taller and longer items within a metre. We worked collectively to measure things that were more than a metre tall. We measure each other! Today the children have been comparing different lengths, they have been doing addition and subtraction calculations to calculate the total length/height and the different between two lengths/heights. The children are going onto explore measure through problem solving.

In geography this week we have been looking at the Polar Regions. We learnt lots about the Arctic and Antarctic before the children went off and worked in their pairs to sort information about the polar regions using a venn diagram. The children sorted the information accordingly. Once they had sorted the facts they were given, they were challenged to write their own facts about the polar regions to put in the centre of the venn diagram, this means that the fact had to be applicable for both the Arctic and Antarctic. They recorded these on postit notes.

In art today the children have been exploring a wide variety of materials. The children also learnt the names of the different materials too. In our next lesson we are going to discuss and record the properties of 3 of the materials we looked at today. Exploring the materials has enabled us to have a better understanding of what is available to us when we recreate our 'Tiger in a tropical storm' piece of art.

In science today we had biodegradable plant pots using newspaper. We then filled them with compost and planted a sunflower seed in each. The children made two, one to take home and one to keep at school. As our sunflowers grow, we are going to apply our knowledge of measuring and measuring their height! The children are going to be learning about the different parts of the plant and using their own sunflowers as reference.

In English today we have been researching Madagascar. We found out lots of interesting information. The children recorded the facts in their books using bullet points. Next week we are going to use our new knowledge of Madagascar to write a postcard.
